 What are Binga Baskets

Wall decor winnowing basket sets or Binga wall baskets are crafted using locally and naturally growing wild grasses here in Zimbabwe. Binga/Tonga Baskets are traditional grain winnowing baskets handmade by the Batonga people in the Binga district of Zimbabwe along the Zambezi River. These techniques have been passed down to the next generation for decades. Traditional designs includes but not limited to stripes, a spider web type pattern and a lightning pattern.

The largest Binga basket is about 50cm in diameter and the smallest is about 25cm in diameter.

Where are Binga Baskets From

Binga is a district in Zimbabwe that is susceptible to drought and poverty. Over the centuries the Tonga tribe women have perfected their techniques of basket weaving to be able to feed their families. They now produce a complete range of winnowing baskets that offer great strength and design. Allowing you to use these winnowing baskets for anything from storage to decoration. These beautiful handwoven Binga baskets are made Tonga women in Zimbabwe and originally been used for winnowing grain. These baskets are truly unique both in their colours and designs as each lady expresses herself in each piece. Perfect for wall decoration or for displaying fruit and bread on the table.

Binga Baskets by HandiworksCraft

Each basket is made locally made and checked for perfection before it is handed out for selling. This allows us to offer you an authentic piece from the tribe. It takes approximately two weeks to complete a basket about 35 cm in diameter. The baskets are made from the ilala palm (mapokwe in Tonga or murara in Shona), which, although growing freely, is also planted by Tonga women for the purpose of basket making.

Also, these baskets are largely used in the African region and come in various sizes. So you can use them easily without having to worry about durability. These baskets will make a great addition to your wall decor collection and will make for a stunning piece in your home.

You will receive a basket closely similar to the ones pictured, but please bear in mind each basket is uniquely handcrafted.

It is also a perfect gift for a girlfriend, mum or sister or, for a stylish friend who appreciates ethically made home-ware and art
